Power to Hydrogen (P2H2) has begun installation of a 0.5 MW AEM electrolyzer at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, with commissioning planned for September 2026. The system uses two 250 kW anion exchange membrane (AEM) stacks and is described as the first industrial installation using stacks of this size.
The electrolyzer is P2H2’s first commercial deployment of its modular M-Class technology, designed for systems up to 25 MW. It operates under pressure and can respond to changing renewable electricity supply in less than 50 milliseconds. Unlike PEM electrolyzers, the AEM technology uses lower-cost materials such as steel and nickel instead of precious metals; P2H2 claims this can reduce capital costs by up to 65% compared with comparable PEM systems.
The Antwerp installation will demonstrate hydrogen production under industrial operating conditions and provide a basis for future multi-megawatt projects. Initial hydrogen offtaker will be Holthausen, a supplier of industrial gases and hydrogen-powered trucks.
