Borregaard’s lignosulfonates have been reauthorised in the EU as technological feed additives (binders) for all animal species, following a 13-year approval process involving EFSA and the European Commission.

Lignosulfonates are water-soluble lignin derivatives obtained from lignocellulosic biomass during sulfite pulping. Borregaard produces them as part of its wood-based biorefinery operations. In animal feed they are used primarily as binders, improving pellet formation and mechanical stability.

The EU authorisation covers calcium, sodium and magnesium lignosulfonates containing at least 55% lignosulfonate and no more than 20% reducing sugars. Maximum permitted levels are 10,000 mg/kg complete feed for weaned piglets, fattening pigs and chickens, laying hens and fattening cattle, and 8,000 mg/kg for other animal species and categories. The authorisation runs until March 2034.
