Yara has inaugurated Europe’s largest industrial carbon capture facility at its ammonia and fertilizer plant in Sluiskil, the Netherlands. The project establishes a cross-border CCS value chain from CO₂ capture and liquefaction to transport and permanent geological storage.
The facility can capture and liquefy up to 800,000 t of CO₂ per year from ammonia production. The liquefied CO₂ is temporarily stored at Sluiskil before being transported by Northern Lights vessels to Øygarden, Norway.
There, the CO₂ is injected and permanently stored 2,600 m below the seabed. Over the next 15 years, the project is expected to capture and store approximately 12 million t of CO₂.
The project demonstrates industrial-scale CCS for energy-intensive sectors such as ammonia and fertilizer production, cement and waste management. For Yara, CCS will also reduce the carbon footprint of ammonia production and support the production of low-carbon fertilizers, ammonia and maritime fuels.
