Porsche and recycling specialist cylib have produced test cells using cathode active material made entirely from recycled raw materials recovered from end-of-life Porsche high-voltage batteries.
Porsche and German battery recycler cylib have reached a new stage in their closed-loop battery pilot. End-of-life Porsche batteries are discharged, dismantled and mechanically processed into black mass; lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese are then recovered and processed for reuse. Porsche has now produced test cells in which recycled raw materials fully replace primary raw materials in the cathode active material. The cells are undergoing performance testing, while recovered materials from Porsche batteries are expected to become available for new cell production from 2028.
The project also links to cylib’s industrial scale-up in Germany. In July, the company acquired a battery pre-processing facility in Wernberg-Köblitz with capacity for up to 10,000 tonnes of end-of-life EV batteries per year. Its hydrometallurgical recycling facility in Dormagen is under development.
